Starting the project, Shinan Qiu immediately fell in love with the beautiful yard, the big oak trees, the bubbling creeks and the birds singing. How to utilize the site's advantages and bring the serene nature to the indoor living become the continuous theme of this project. After numerous design options with consideration of improving circulation and layout, the architects decide to relocate the kitchen and half bathroom that were originally at the rear of the building to the front. This will not only free the rear wall for a continuous view of nature. but also allows future owners no longer need to go through the kitchen when they enter home from the garage. Three French door enable maximum access to the screen porch, truly connecting inside and outside. The space at the first floor is dynamic and flexible. The space next to the laundry room can be used as a sitting area, a hobby corner or breakfast nook, while also allowing the dining room to expand. The dining and living space can further expand to the screened porch. A perfect entertainment space that is designed for any scenario, either a small family gathering or a big holiday celebration.
At the second level, an existing bedroom is converted to the spacious ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet, while preserving the connection to the yard from every room.
A brand new bar, bathroom and bedroom is added to the basement as well as the skylight system, Nature and artificial lights are combined to let the user forget that they are below grade, while feeling the connection with outside. The space is ready for any future owner's need, whether turning it into a home cinema, home office ,game room, bar, Spa, or an in-law suite, the space is adequate.
The primary interior color tone is white and light colored wood with some highlight and accent colors. A lot of natural wood is used, including the cedar panels, oak floor and cabinets with light finishes to enhance their primitive beauty. These not only blur the boundaries of indoor and outdoor, but also enhance the architect's design principle: Home is a peaceful place to relax, rest and enjoy.
